Sutra 1.1

अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥१॥

atha yogānuśāsanam

atha: now; yoga, yoga; anuśāsanam, teachings

Now, the teachings of yoga [begin]

Yoga is translated as “to add”, “to join”, “to unite”, and is a popular translation that can be found. It is important to point out that the sixteenth-century Indian doxographer Mādhava stated that the goal of yoga is not to join but to separate. To disconnect purusa(Self) from prakriti (nature). So what does this mean? It means that the essential goal of yoga is “yoke”/”unite” oneself with their higher self and detach from the nature (prakriti) of the world and consciousness.

Knowing where your mind is now is important to know where you are going- Swami Jnaneshvara

By accepting where you are now when you begin, you can allow yourself to begin removing the obstacles  of false identities that remain in your way to achieving a higher Self. Awakening to your true self is Yoga.

I am an eclectic woman in my late, yeah, late, twenties who LOVES a good book, strong tea/coffee, and loud music. Writing is the expression of the soul. As a yoga instructor my focus is always on proper alignment of the asana, stability of the pranayama, and stillness of the mind. My intention is to share my passion and love for books and reading with wonderful people everywhere. May you all live beautifully and authentically. Namaste
